One River Gallery of Art and Design will present free workshops for children ages K through 12 at a summer camp open house event on Sunday, March 2. Parents will have the opportunity to take advantage of a summer camp information session, refreshments, and to meet the camp’s instructors.

“Our Summer Camp Open House will give aspiring young artists a taste of the kind of great programs we’ll be offering throughout the summer months,” says Matt Ross, founder of One River. “Each of our exciting Open House workshops will be led by a member of our expert staff of professional artists, and will teach a new, fun, and useful skill to each participating student.”

The Summer Camp Open House schedule will include:

Grades K-2:
“Drawing Monsters” (11:00-11:45AM)
Students will dig deep into their imaginations and learn important techniques in line, color, shape, and expression when creating their favorite gruesome, scary, and crazy beasts.

“Picasso's Guitars” (12:00-12:45PM)
By combining collage, found object sculpture, and stylistic elements of Cubism and abstraction, students will create their own musical instruments using images of the famous guitar pieces by Pablo Picasso as inspiration.

“Planes, Trains & Automobiles” (1:00-1:45PM)
Students will examine models and detailed photographs of motorized vehicles and learn how to show all of the details and parts that go into making these vehicles move. Students will also be invited to create an imaginary transportation system.

Grades 3-5:
“Street Art” (11:00-11:45AM)
Students will examine popular techniques used by contemporary street artists who are stepping outside of their studios to bring their work into the public sphere.

“Musically Inspired Painting” (12:00-12:45PM)
Students will use different genres of music (pop, rap, classical, jazz) to inspire their own visual expression.

Teens:
“2D Animation” (11:00-11:45PM)
Students with an interest in computers and digital drawing will get a glimpse of how to create and manipulate characters using Adobe Flash.

“Photography” (12:00-12:45PM)
Whether using camera phones, video cameras, or still cameras to take pictures, students will learn basic principles of digital photography that will immediately improve their photographic creations.

Filmmaking (1:00-1:45PM)
Students will get a glimpse at the essential techniques used in filmmaking, including directing, acting, cinematography, and editing.

Electronic Music Production (2:00-2:45PM)
Newcomers to music production will be introduced to the technical and creative process of making beats and manipulating sounds in Ableton Suite 8, the premier software used in EDM (electronic dance music).

Digital Illustration (3:00-3:45PM)
Students will mix traditional drawing techniques with digital training to create digital paintings, vector illustration, and 3D computer graphics using Wacom tablets and Adobe software.
